Miletos was a prosperous and influential Ionian city on the western coast of Anatolia, commanding trade routes and founding colonies such as Naucratis and settlements around the Black Sea. It was home to the Milesian school, including Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, and to Hippodamus, associated with grid-based urban planning. Miletos helped develop the Ionic order, led the Ionian Revolt, and was destroyed by Persia in 494 BC before being rebuilt.
