Niko Kralj – Chair and Stool Set – Stol Kamnik – Yugoslavia, circa 1954–1960

Original early-production chair and matching stool from the cross-connection series designed by Niko Kralj for Stol Kamnik, an important example of post-war Slovenian furniture design.

Both pieces retain their original construction, including the characteristic cross-shaped wooden support beneath the seats and the central fixing screw, as documented in specialist literature on Niko Kralj’s work.

The set has recently undergone careful conservation and restoration. The wooden surfaces were cleaned, lightly brushed and refinished with a clear protective lacquer. Small holes, scratches and surface imperfections accumulated over more than sixty years of use were filled and stabilized while preserving the vintage character of the pieces.

The white finish is not original to the factory production. The pieces were originally finished in natural wood, while the white paint was added later by a previous owner. This later finish has been retained as part of the set’s history, creating a distinctive contrast with the natural wood seats.

Both pieces are structurally sound, stable and ready for use. They remain in well-preserved vintage condition, with minor age-related traces consistent with their history and recent restoration. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.

A partially preserved original paper label remains underneath the stool. Although worn with age, it clearly identifies the piece as “STOLČEK” (stool), model 1402, and preserves part of the original production and quality-control information.
