This two chairs were produced in the Thonet factories in Radomsko, where Thonet had established furniture factories already before World War I. They did so because there was plenty of beech timber and enough workers, who in Austria during World War I were often drafted into the army. Michael Thonet is regarded as the first and most important furniture designer. He was also the first to perfect steam bending of wood to the degree that it could be applied in industrial furniture manufacture. The steam-bent elements are clearly visible on these chairs as well. This gave the Thonet chair stability. It is remarkable how stable these chairs still are, despite being over 100 years old! These two chairs are still 100% original. No repairs are visible anywhere, and all original fasteners are still present. The wear spots where the chairs were picked up, notably in the middle of the backrest, are very handsome (see photos). All such signs of use are still present and visible on the chairs. On both chairs the “Levee” sticker is still present, and on one of the two chairs the text “A. P’M’” and “Made in Poland” can still be clearly read, along with a small portion of Levee’s address label, and two stickers with the word “waterproof,” indicating that the seat was glued with waterproof glue. Both chairs have always been together and were sold as a set by the Levee company in the 1930s. The chairs are still sturdy. Therefore these antique chairs are not only beautiful pieces of furniture in a room, but also fully usable as chairs. And of course they are conversation starters, with the history they carry along. The chairs are professionally packed and insured for shipping.
