This is a classic Japanese bronze decorative vase from the early‑mid 20th century. It follows the authentic casting tradition of the late‑Edo master metalworker Murata Seimin and is fully cast in one piece using the traditional lost‑wax method. The vase features a multi‑lobed flared bellflower‑shaped opening together with a waisted ball‑form high foot. It represents a fine example of Japanese plain‑surface metal‑art.
A genuine high‑grade Wabi‑Sabi bronze vessel, it presents a stately and well‑proportioned form with clean, crisp lines. The rim is shaped as a flared multi‑lobed bellflower. The body has a full, rounded belly tapering to a waisted section supported by a ball‑form high foot. The overall proportions are balanced, conveying a calm, powerful and understated elegance.
There is no ornate surface decoration; aesthetic expression relies entirely on masterful traditional casting and flowing silhouette, a quintessential example of Japanese Wabi‑Sabi aesthetics. It radiates quiet oriental Zen‑spirit with understated simplicity and serene subtlety.
Bellflower is one of Japan’s Seven Autumn Flowers and a historic samurai‑class symbolic motif, standing for integrity, steadfast spirit and timeless grace. This piece harmonises these auspicious cultural connotations with minimalist Wabi‑Sabi design. It carries a soft, refined presence, suitable for traditional ikebana flower‑arrangement and tea‑room display, as well as contemporary‑style interiors. It combines practical decorative function with considerable artistic‑collector value.
The square cast seal “Seimin (整珉)” on the base identifies it as a work from the Murata Seimin (村田整珉) workshop lineage with authentic craftsmanship and clear attribution. 1st‑generation Murata Seimin was an outstanding late‑Edo bronze‑casting master who founded his own metal‑art school. His precisely‑executed, refined works are held in Japanese museum collections and he is regarded as a benchmark figure in modern Japanese bronze craft.
The whole surface has developed a thick, even natural aged patina, together with natural oxidation and wear over time, creating the distinctive tactile quality of antique metalware. No cracks, no repairs. Condition is good relative to its age.
