Striking Scandinavian adjustable floor lamp from the late 1960s / early 1970s, produced by Elidus and design by Hans-Agne Jakobsson.

The lamp has an unusually sculptural and generously proportioned cylindrical spotlight shade, mounted on a long adjustable brass-tone arm.

The construction is particularly distinctive and includes:
tall slender brass-tone stem
circular weighted base
central coupling sleeve in the vertical stem
characteristic black spherical adjustment joint
long diagonal adjustable arm
free-running electrical cable exiting from the rear of the arm
large directional cylindrical metal shade
original period electrical components
E27 lamp fitting

Jakobsson’s lighting designs are known for their combination of functional adjustability, brass and metal construction, strong geometric forms and controlled directional light.

The lamp represents a highly attractive example of Scandinavian post-war lighting design, with a particularly bold oversized spotlight head that gives it considerably more visual presence than a conventional reading lamp.

Lamp Head
One of the strongest features of this example is the unusually large cylindrical shade.
The shade measures approximately 15 cm in diameter and 18–19 cm deep and features:
broad rolled front rim
deep cylindrical profile
directional light output
elongated ventilation openings to the rear
adjustable positioning through the articulated arm
Its proportions give the lamp a distinctive architectural and almost industrial Space Age character.

Condition
Good original vintage condition.
The lamp shows normal signs of approximately 50 years of age and use, including:
minor surface scratches
several small dents / pressure marks
light oxidation and patina
normal wear to the brass-tone surfaces
a few small paint spots
minor marks to the base

The small paint spots appear superficial and should be removable with careful cleaning.

The lamp has deliberately not been aggressively polished or restored, preserving its original vintage surface and character.

The lamp is working.

Original / period electrical components remain present.
The lamp has been tested and is functioning.

As with all vintage electrical lighting, inspection by a qualified electrician is recommended before prolonged use, particularly when used in a country with different electrical regulations.

Historical Context

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was one of Sweden’s important post-war lighting designers and developed numerous lighting designs characterised by carefully controlled light, metal construction and elegant Scandinavian functionality.

Elidus AB of Fristad, Sweden, produced a wide range of modern adjustable lighting during the 1960s and 1970s, including floor, table and wall lamps in brass, metal and technical plastic.

The present lamp belongs stylistically and structurally to this Scandinavian lighting environment, while its unusually large cylindrical shade gives the design a particularly strong individual character.

The shade, base, stem and articulated components will be individually protected using multiple layers of suitable packing material.
