A Moulded Shufu-type White-glazed Bowl with Floral Patterns, Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), Jingdezhen, China Diameter 11.3 cm / Height 4.5 cm With a collector's box This finely potted bowl is of elegant and well-balanced form, with a shallow rounded body rising from a short foot to a gently everted rim. The exterior is decorated with several subtle raised horizontal ribs, adding a restrained sense of structure and rhythm to the otherwise plain form. The interior is moulded with a floral design, softly emerging beneath the glaze and best appreciated under shifting light, reflecting the understated beauty characteristic of Yuan dynasty Jingdezhen white wares. The bowl is covered overall in a white glaze with a faint bluish tone. The glaze is smooth, gentle and restrained, with the slightly thickened quality often associated with Shufu-type wares. Yuan dynasty Jingdezhen white-glazed wares of this type inherited the refined elegance of Song dynasty Qingbai ceramics, while developing a more composed and substantial glaze character and vessel form, representative of high-quality ceramics of the period. The term “Shufu” is commonly associated with Yuan dynasty Jingdezhen wares covered in a soft, opaque white glaze, often with a subtle bluish cast, and frequently decorated with moulded or lightly incised designs. Such wares are admired for their dignified restraint rather than elaborate ornamentation. Condition: Overall in good antique condition, consistent with age and type. The surface shows natural wear consistent with age, including glaze ageing, light surface abrasions, minor kiln imperfections, iron spots, kiln grit, and areas of discoloration. The rim shows light wear with several very small glaze nicks. There is a small glazed chip to the rim measuring approximately 0.3 cm, which appears to be a firing flaw rather than later damage. There is also a small area of glaze loss near the centre of the interior, measuring approximately 0.3 cm in diameter. Minor glaze losses, firing marks, and small abrasions are visible to the interior, exterior, and foot area. The foot ring and underside show age-related wear, kiln residue, soil deposits, and natural oxidation. Under ultraviolet light inspection, no obvious restoration is visible.
