Phoenix Ale - PHOENIX ALE 标牌:真实粉笔材质,非塑料仿制品 - 广告标牌 - Chaulk

Rare Vintage Genuine Chaulk Hand-Painted Phoenix Ale Promotional Display Figure or Advertising Sign from mid-century Irish Brewing Memorabilia, display item typical of Irish pubs from the mid-20th century (1950s–1970s). Long before the mid-century ale brand, the name originated from the Phoenix Brewery, established around 1778 on James's Street, Dublin, practically right across the road from Guinness, O'Connell's Dublin Ale: In 1831, the famous Irish political leader Daniel O'Connell helped his son, Daniel Jr., purchase the brewery. Under their management, it produced a highly popular regional beer known as “O'Connell’s Ale”. The drink was so culturally integrated into Dublin life that it was even famously referenced by James Joyce in Finnegans Wake, Second Largest in Ireland: By the late 19th century, the Phoenix Brewery expanded massively by swallowing neighboring breweries. It publicly advertised itself as “the largest brewery in Ireland but one”—second only to the sprawling operations of its neighbor, Guinness, The Shutdown: As corporate consolidation took hold in the early 20th century, the brewery was bought out by competing firms and eventually shut down in 1909, The 1950s Revival: Cherry’s Brewery & Guinness The modern brand of "Phoenix Ale" promotional item was actually launched in April 1956. A New Modern Ale: It was introduced as “a new 'bright' ale to suit Irish tastes and meet modern trends at a moderate price.” It was developed to compete directly with Smithwick's, which dominated the Irish ale market at the time. The Waterford Connection: The beer was distributed by Cherry-Cairnes Ltd. While the commercial administration was a joint project, the brewing itself took place at Cherry’s Brewery in Waterford (a facility controlled by Guinness). World’s Best Beer (1958): The brand gained major prestige early on when Phoenix Prize Ale won first prize at an international beer competition in Belgium in 1958. This award-winning milestone became a central feature on its subsequent bottle labels and tin signs, which proudly bore the "First Prize, Belgium 1958" seal. The End of the Line As consumer tastes shifted heavily toward stouts and modern lagers throughout the late 20th century, production slowed to a crawl. In 2003, brewing operations officially ceased at the old Waterford plant, effectively marking the definitive end for Phoenix Ale. Today, unopened bottles and old pub advertisements are highly collectible pieces of nostalgic Irish breweriana
