Northwest Africa 14501 (NWA 14501)
(Northwest Africa)
Purchased: 2021
Classification: Ordinary chondrite (LL7)
History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.
Physical characteristics: Grayish rock largely covered with fusion crust.
Petrography: The meteorite exhibits a recrystallized texture with abundant triple junctions between adjoining minerals. Feldspar often poikilitically encloses rounded to subrounded low-Ca pyroxene and olivine grains. Many Ca-pyroxene grains show low-Ca pyroxene exsolution lamellae and many albitic feldspar grains contain fine lamella-shaped K-feldspar exsolutions. Accessory phases include minor FeNi metal and troilite grains, low-Ti chromite, and Cl-apatite. A single relict chondrule was detected in the section studied. The meteorite contains shock melt rock veins.
Geochemistry: olivine: Fa30.4±0.2 (Fa30.2-30.7, n=7); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs24.8±0.1Wo1.9±0.2 (Fs24.7-25.0Wo1.6-2.1, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs10.9±0.1Wo41.5±0.4 (Fs10.8-11.0Wo41.0-41.9, n=3); feldspar: An11.6±0.1Ab82.7±0.6Or5.7±0.6, n=5
