两幅日本挂轴画——《竹林中的猛虎》与《武士盔甲》 - 纸, 真丝 - Kyōshinsai - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Short description of the item and its origin This lot comprises two traditional Japanese hanging scrolls, both presented in the classic kakejiku format. The first scroll, “Tiger Hidden Among Bamboo,” depicts a powerful tiger emerging from a bamboo grove. Executed predominantly in expressive monochrome ink with subtle tonal variation, the painting captures the strength and alert presence of the animal while the bamboo creates a sense of depth and movement. The work is signed “Kyōshinsai” (狂心斎) and bears a red seal in the lower-left area. The second scroll, “Samurai Armour,” depicts a finely detailed suit of traditional Japanese samurai armour (gusoku), including the helmet, protective armour, decorative fittings and associated military elements. The vivid use of red, black, gold and muted colours gives the composition a strong ceremonial and imposing character. The pairing of these two scrolls is particularly meaningful: one depicts the fierce power of a tiger concealed among bamboo, while the other presents the strength and solidity of ancient samurai armour. The majesty of the tiger and the martial character of the armour complement one another, creating an evocative pairing that brings together courage, warrior spirit and the wish for enduring military fortune. The tiger itself has long carried associations with strength and power in East Asian artistic traditions, while tiger imagery also became closely connected with samurai aesthetics and warrior culture in Japan. Both paintings are mounted as traditional Japanese hanging scrolls with decorative textile borders and wooden roller bars. The roller ends are made of bone. Together, they offer collectors an attractive combination of animal imagery and samurai culture, with a strong visual and thematic connection between the two works. Origin: Japan. Collector’s Value & Benefits This pair offers collectors two distinctive aspects of traditional Japanese artistic culture: the powerful symbolism of the tiger and the martial heritage of the samurai. The Tiger Hidden Among Bamboo combines expressive ink painting with one of the most recognizable animal subjects in East Asian art. The tiger conveys strength, courage and authority, while the bamboo provides a contrasting sense of natural elegance and resilience. The Samurai Armour painting focuses on the ceremonial and historical character of Japan's warrior tradition. The detailed depiction of the armour, helmet and associated equipment makes it particularly appealing to collectors interested in samurai history, Japanese military culture and traditional Japanese painting. As a pair, the two works are especially appealing because their subjects reinforce one another: the tiger represents the fierce spirit and courage of the warrior, while the armour represents protection, strength and martial readiness. Together they create a meaningful visual pairing centred on strength, bravery and the enduring spirit of the warrior. Their traditional kakejiku format, decorative mountings and contrasting subjects also make the pair suitable for both collection and display. Dimensions (in cm) Scroll 1 – Tiger Hidden Among Bamboo: Overall: approximately 179 × 47 cm Painting area: approximately 90 × 35 cm Scroll 2 – Samurai Armour: Overall: approximately 177 × 38 cm Painting area: approximately 90 × 26 cm The dimensions above refer to the complete mounted hanging scrolls.
