A magnificent, iconic expression of the Bruichladdich 10-year-old. Both the cork stopper and the 40% ABV strength make this bottle a rare liquid time capsule of the 'old' production philosophy today. Anyone currently in possession of such a bottle holds a tangible piece of Islay history from the time when the distillery was in danger of disappearing from the map for good. These specific bottles are so iconic among whisky enthusiasts that Bruichladdich recently released a limited "Bruichladdich Old Skool" edition. The label and design of that modern release were directly inspired by this legendary White Label / Red Letter variant. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the situation for Scotch whisky—and particularly for the distilleries on Islay—was completely different from today. The industry was facing a global crisis known as the "Whisky Loch." This specific "Tall White Label" design with red lettering was the distillery's standard official bottling during that period. In the early 1990s, the Bruichladdich distillery was owned by Invergordon Distillers, a company itself acquired by Whyte & Mackay in 1993. Because whisky production was excessive and demand was low at the time, Bruichladdich was deemed "surplus." In 1994/1995, the distillery was completely mothballed (shut down), leaving only two staff members behind to guard the casks. Since this bottle was filled in the early 1990s, it contains spirit distilled in the early 1980s. This was a time when the distillery still operated in a purely traditional, Victorian manner, without modern computer-controlled technologies. Unlike its heavily peated neighbors on Islay (such as Laphroaig or Ardbeg), Bruichladdich—using its very tall, narrow stills—produced an unpeated style characterized by floral, citrusy, and slightly salty notes. The casks used at the time (often refill hogsheads or ex-bourbon barrels) allowed for a subtle maturation that let the pure character of the spirit shine through. Following its reopening in 2001, the Bruichladdich distillery committed to a minimum bottling strength of 46% ABV (without chill-filtration) to preserve more flavor.
