Pair of Antique Pressed-Glass Candlesticks, circa 1890–1930 A matching pair of antique candlesticks of unusual multi-part construction, combining translucent amethyst-purple moulded/pressed glass with very dark brown-black glass and patinated cast-metal elements. The candlesticks are of strongly historicist character, with decorative forms recalling late 19th- and early 20th-century Neo-Baroque and Rococo Revival design. Each candlestick is constructed from several separately formed components assembled around a central metal rod. The broad lower foot is made of very dark moulded glass and features pronounced lobed and foliate relief. Above the foot is a ribbed, bulbous amethyst-purple glass section, followed by a stepped and domed glass element. A decorative patinated cast-metal collar with raised ornamental decoration connects the principal glass sections. The upper part consists of another strongly ribbed, rounded glass element surmounted by a wide, flared candle cup with a scalloped rim. The glass has pronounced vertical ribbing and repeated symmetrical moulded decoration. The forms and relief indicate moulded/pressed glass production rather than cut crystal. The combination of amethyst-purple glass, very dark glass, deeply moulded relief and ornamental metal collars gives these candlesticks a distinctive historicist appearance.
