Large Spanish Early Baroque Devotional Figure – Possibly the Virgin Mary – 18th century Probably Spain, 18th century Carved wood with remains of historic polychromy Height: 81 cm Width: 30 cm The figure is exceptionally well carved, with a serene and introspective facial expression that gives the sculpture a strong devotional presence. The softly modelled features, elegant proportions and carefully worked drapery are characteristic of Spanish religious sculpture. The figure may represent the Virgin Mary. As the original arms and attributes are no longer present, a definitive identification is unfortunately no longer possible. The sculpture retains visible traces of historic polychromy. Parts of the surface appear to have been repainted or refreshed during the 18th century, which is entirely consistent with the long devotional use of this type of religious sculpture. The work is carved from a light-coloured wood, possibly limewood. Despite the losses to the arms and the natural signs of age, the sculpture has retained a particularly strong sculptural presence. The expressive face, monumental scale and surviving traces of early polychromy make this a very attractive example of Spanish devotional sculpture Condition The sculpture shows wear, losses and traces of historic restoration consistent with its age and devotional use. Both arms are missing. Remains of historic polychromy are present, with probable later 18th-century overpainting or retouching in places.
