The Coffee Grinder

A beautiful antique cast-iron coffee grinder by Peugeot Frères, marked "Peugeot Frères Brevetés S.G.D.G." on the base.

Peugeot is best known today for automobiles, but the company began in the 19th century producing high-quality mills, grinders, and other cast-iron goods long before entering the car industry. This example features the brand's classic domed hopper lid, an ornate cast-iron bracket housing the adjustable grind-coarseness mechanism (with wingnut adjuster), and a hand crank with a turned wooden handle. Ground coffee collects in the wooden drawer below, set on its original oak base. The grinder is fully functional. Based on its casting style and construction, it dates to approximately 1890–1930.
