铁(铸/锻) - Katsuhiko 勝彦 Takaoka Copperware 高岡銅器 - 日本的吉祥守护狮(狛犬) - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

This is a powerful bronze sculpture of a “Tamano-ri Shishi” 玉乗獅子 (Lion Riding on a Sacred Ball), made by Katsuhiko 勝彦 of Takaoka copperware (Takaoka dōki 高岡銅器), one of Japan’s most respected traditional metalcraft traditions. The sculpture depicts a fierce shishi lion dynamically balancing upon a sacred ball. Its sharp expression, flowing mane, muscular body, and tense posture are all rendered with remarkable detail and energy. In Japanese tradition, the shishi lion is regarded as a sacred guardian beast that wards off evil spirits and protects homes, temples, and people from misfortune. The “tamano-ri” (riding on a ball) motif carries especially auspicious meanings such as: Warding off evil Protection from misfortune Inviting good fortune and prosperity Spiritual protection According to traditional beliefs, the sacred ball is a treasured object given to the lion by divine beings such as gods or tengu. The lion expresses joy and gratitude by dancing energetically with the ball. Because of this symbolism, Tamano-ri Shishi sculptures have long been displayed at entrances and tokonoma alcoves as protective and auspicious objects. This piece has an exceptional sense of weight and presence, weighing approximately 5420 g. The large size and heavy bronze construction give it a very impressive appearance. The detailed casting quality is particularly attractive: The lion’s fierce facial expression The flowing mane and tail The dynamic movement of the body The beautifully balanced sacred ball The strong sense of motion and tension All of these elements combine to create a sculpture full of vitality and dignity. It is an eye-catching work that strongly conveys the spirit of traditional Japanese bronze craftsmanship. This is an excellent piece for collectors of Japanese antiques, samurai culture, Buddhist art, folk beliefs, or Takaoka bronze works. Height 24.0 cm Width 29.8 cm Depth 12.8 cm Weight 5320 g Condition: The condition is generally good. There are cracks on the bottom of the ball. However, this does not affect its display. As this is a used item, there may be damage such as scratches, stains, peeling, scuffs, and dents. It has been stored at home. Please check the numerous photos provided. Atention: The items listed for sale are all used collectibles. Please consider them to have signs of aging, such as stains, scratches, scuffs, tears, discoloration, fading, fraying, and changes in thread color.
