A finely decorated folding lorgnette, dating from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870. The lorgnette is ingeniously constructed with two rectangular lenses which fold into a shaped white-metal case, forming a compact and elegant object when closed. A suspension ring is fitted to one end, allowing the lorgnette to be carried or attached to a chain. The exterior is richly engraved throughout, with a finely lined ground decorated with alternating chevron bands, small stars and geometric motifs, enclosed within elaborate scrolling borders. The shaped outline and contrasting gilt-toned screws and internal fittings further enhance the decorative character of the piece. When opened, the two rectangular lenses unfold on articulated hinges to form a double lorgnette. The surviving mechanism illustrates the compact and sophisticated construction characteristic of 19th-century personal optical accessories. The lenses are present and the folding mechanism operates. The white-metal surfaces display minor rubbing, scratches, tarnishing and age-related wear, with slight irregularities to the lens frames consistent with age and use.
