Chinese Blue and White Deep Plate in the Style of Wanli Kraak Porcelain
China, Kangxi period, early 18th century
A deep Chinese porcelain plate decorated in underglaze blue, dating from the early 18th-century Kangxi period. The design is a sophisticated reinterpretation of the earlier Wanli-period Kraak porcelain tradition.
The central medallion depicts a detailed waterscape with distant mountains, a large flowering two-horned peony and an aster to the left. The deep rounded sides are divided into alternating broad and narrow panels, filled with stylised floral, foliate and auspicious motifs, including the characteristic hanging ribbons associated with this type of decoration.
The combination of the Kraak-inspired panelled border and the refined Kangxi interpretation makes this an attractive example of the period's revival of earlier Chinese export designs.
