Antique Japanese Boxwood Kirin (Qilin) Netsuke/Okimono – Roaring Pose A dynamically carved boxwood figure of a kirin (qilin), the auspicious mythical beast of Sino-Japanese legend, captured mid-roar with raised forepaws and an open, fanged mouth. The body is densely textured with fine, dragon-like scale relief work, and the tail curls elegantly upward into a pierced spiral. A drilled hole to the flank, used together with the tail's pierced spiral, likely serves as the himotoshi (cord holes), indicating the piece could be worn as a netsuke as well as displayed as a standalone okimono. The rich patina of the boxwood enhances the depth of the carving.
