About This Piece Rich amber-toned keyaki wood with prominent natural grain is beautifully contrasted by the black traditional-style metal fittings arranged across the three drawers. Design and Craftsmanship This small tabletop tansu is made from natural Keyaki (欅, Japanese zelkova) wood. It measures approximately 20 cm in height and 14 cm in width and has three vertically arranged drawers. The front displays prominent natural wood grain across its warm, deep amber-toned surface. Each drawer is fitted with a black handle and decorative metal fittings at the four corners. Fine patterns can also be seen on the central handles, creating a traditional Japanese appearance against the warm color of the wood. The sides reveal further variations in the flow and tone of the natural grain. When the drawers are opened, their lighter-colored interiors provide a clear contrast with the darker exterior. Origin and Period This piece dates from the Shōwa period (1926–1989) and was made by Takayama Keyaki Kogei ( 高山けやき工芸 ) in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Hida Takayama (飛騨高山) is a region with a long-established woodworking culture supported by its abundant timber resources. Use The three drawers can be used to organize small personal items such as jewelry, accessories, or keys. In addition to its practical use as a small storage chest, it can also be displayed as a tabletop interior piece featuring natural wood grain and traditional Japanese-style metal fittings. Condition Although this piece has been stored for a long period, it remains in very good overall condition, and the interiors of the drawers are also clean.
