Rare 1894 (AH 1312) Sudan Mahdist State 20 Piastres / Qirsh (Omdurman Mint — Khalifa Abdallahi)
Up for auction is a remarkable piece of African colonial and military history: a rare AH 1312 (1894 AD) 20 Piastres (Qirsh) coin issued in Omdurman under Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad during the Mahdist State in Sudan.
Value / Denomination: 20 Piastres / Qirsh (Base Metal / Copper-Billik issue)
Obverse: Features the Toughra monogram surrounded by decorative olive branches, floral sprays, and star clusters.
Reverse: Features the mint inscription "Duriba fi Omdurman" (Struck in Omdurman), the accession date 1312 AH, and regnal year 12 above, flanked by ornate floral elements.
Condition: Excellent, rich bronze patina with unusually sharp raised calligraphy and detailed floral borders for these locally cast/struck Mahdist issues (see photos for full condition).
A historic centerpiece for collectors of Sudan coinage, Mahdist War history, Islamic world issues, or 19th-century African state money!
