Created by Cochiti Pueblo potter Dorothy Herrera, this lovely storyteller measures approx. 4 inches tall; approx. 2 1/2 inches wide, and approx. 2 1/2 inches deep. The artist's signature, her initials, is clearly painted on the base. The storyteller has ten (10) children, either clinging to her or sitting on her lap. The children’s faces display a range of emotions from joy to questioning to mad that they have to listen to the story, adding depth and feeling to the piece. The piece is in very good condition, with clear, crisp paint and no evidence of loss. No chips, cracks, repairs, scuffing, or significant soiling are noted. Though not a miniature piece, this is a smaller figure. Dorothy gathers the clay for her pieces from the Cochiti Pueblo; she hand-forms and fires them using traditional methods passed down through generations. The pottery figures known as “Storytellers” first appeared in Native American pottery at Cochiti Pueblo, New Mexico, in 1963, and represent the oral tradition of Indian culture—a testimony to the role of storytelling in passing history, spirituality, and tradition to future generations. Dorothy Herrera began producing pottery for the marketplace in the 1980s; demand for her storyteller figures grew quickly.
