A Japanese Short Sword (Wakizashi) in Aikuchi Mounting Blade: Muromachi Period (1336–1573) — Mounts: Edo Period (c. 1680–1780) — Registered Blade An elegant and quietly imposing short sword pairing a blade of considerable antiquity with refined later mounts — a combination characteristic of the finest Japanese swords, in which a treasured early blade was reguarded over the generations according to the taste of the day. The piece is offered with its copy of Japanese registration certificate (tōroku-shō), classifying it as a wakizashi of approximately 36.8 cm cutting-length: a legally documented Nihontō. The blade (nagasa) dates to the Muromachi period, a genuine forged Japanese blade of graceful, even curvature (sori), rising to a cleanly defined point (kissaki). The polished surface reveals the bright, hardened edge (ha) running the length of the blade against the darker body, with a visible tempering line (hamon) and the subtle activity of a traditionally forged steel. The geometry is crisp and the silhouette refined — a blade carrying the authority of its age, made to be drawn and admired as readily as carried. The mounts (koshirae), of the Edo period, are presented in the guardless aikuchi style, favoured for its clean lines and associations with refinement. The hilt (tsuka) is wrapped in fine pale same (ray or shark skin), its naturally pebbled white surface left exposed rather than over-bound — a deliberately understated treatment that lets the quality of the skin speak. It is fitted with a small menuki-like ornament and retains its butt-cap (fuchi-kashira) in dark horn or lacquered metal, while a blackened collar marks the transition to the blade. The scabbard (saya) is its most arresting feature: lacquered in a dense, swirling textured ground of mottled black, olive and russet tones, worked to resemble agitated grain or roiling water — a sophisticated ishime- or bark-textured lacquer of great tactile richness. The mouth (koiguchi) and tip are finished in contrasting dark horn, and a cloth retaining-cord (sageo) is bound about it. The whole, displayed upon its lacquered stand, is a connoisseur's piece — an authentic registered Muromachi blade housed in tasteful, harmonious Edo mounts whose restrained materials and superb textured lacquer reward close handling. A refined and eminently collectible Nihontō. Blade is in good condition and superficial scratchings as normal. Not hagire and not fatal damage, of course, just a long kitae ware close to the mune on the shinogi ji. This is a japanese weapon so have a real historical value. This is a weapon with centuries, not machine crafted so can be minor movements of saya, tsuka, tsuba, etc. Because of dilatation, humidity, etc. and little damages propers of his age like small rust, scratches, etc..
