A finely decorated pair of Victorian opera glasses, the silver mounts fully hallmarked for Birmingham, 1889, with maker’s mark ‘EL’. The flared barrels are extensively clad in silver and richly worked with dense floral and foliate decoration. Scrolling leaves and stylised flowers are arranged across finely textured grounds, creating a particularly elaborate all-over pattern characteristic of late Victorian decorative metalwork. The silver-mounted barrels are complemented by brass-toned borders and fittings, the contrasting metal finishes accentuating the richly worked decoration. The central focusing mechanism is fitted with a knurled wheel and extends and retracts the barrels. The lenses are present and the focusing mechanism operates. The glasses display surface wear, tarnishing and patination to the metal components consistent with age and use. There is a small dent to the rim of one eyepiece, as visible in the photographs.
