The association between Barolo and the Bertolino family in Nizza Monferrato represents one of the most fascinating historical exceptions in Piedmontese winemaking. Under strict DOCG regulations, Barolo must be produced and vinified exclusively within the designated Langhe area. However, the Bertolino family holds one of the very few rare historical authorizations allowing them to vinify and age Nebbiolo grapes intended for Barolo outside the zone of origin—specifically, in Nizza Monferrato.

The Historic Winery (Giovanni Bertolino & Son): As early as the 1920s and 1930s, the historic firm "Bertolino Giovanni & Son" was bottling fine selections and historic vintages of Barolo in Nizza Monferrato (such as the celebrated collector's bottles from the 1950s and 1960s, including the famous Barolo Riserva Speciale).

Tenuta Olim Bauda: Today, the family tradition continues with siblings Dino, Diana, and Gianni Bertolino at the renowned Tenuta Olim Bauda winery. Thanks to that inherited historic right, the company continues to produce its own Barolo DOCG label—with grapes sourced from the Langhe—vinified entirely within its own cellars in Nizza Monferrato.
