Byôbu 屏风(折叠屏风) - 漆木、丝绸、纸 - 日本 - Taishō period (1912-1926)
A tall six-panel folding screen 屏風 (byôbu), depicting a lively springtime river crossing beneath flowering cherry trees 桜 (sakura).
Two ferry boats carry groups of travellers across the river. One, fitted with a covered cabin, is filled with animated passengers, including women and men enjoying the journey, while a musician appears to hold a shamisen. In the second open boat, travellers sit closely together as the boatman rows towards the opposite bank. Several figures make their way through the shallows on foot, carrying baskets and belongings.
The broad river landscape extends into distant hills with small thatched houses and sailing boats. Large old cherry trees laden with pink blossom dominate the right side, accompanied by pine trees 松 (matsu). Sweeping clouds and mist rendered encompass the scene.
Executed in pigments and ink on paper with gold leaf speckles, surrounded by two patterned silk borders and mounted within a dark lacquered wooden frame.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions:
Total width 370.4 cm (2 × 63.2 cm and 4 × 61 cm); Height 173.8 cm.
In good restored condition with traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. The front has various old restorations and gold leaf patch-ups, with some losses to the mounting. The reverse has been repapered and also shows old repairs. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition.
The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece.
When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
