Original Christie’s London auction catalogue for the sale “Highly Important Ancient Coins”, held on 9 October 1984.

An important reference catalogue devoted to a major collection of classical coinage, with a particularly strong emphasis on ancient gold coins. According to the foreword, the collection was formed over almost forty years from the early 1920s onwards and concentrated principally on Roman coinage, Ptolemaic coinage and the gold staters of the Kings of the Bosporus.

The Roman section contains numerous aurei and other gold issues, including coins of Augustus, Marcus Aurelius, Lucius Verus, Septimius Severus, Julia Domna and Caracalla. Many pieces have notable older provenances, including the Bement Collection, Karna(k) Hoard, Enrico Caruso Collection, Sartiges Collection and Arras Hoard. The catalogue also includes Byzantine coins and an extensive selection of Ptolemaic and Bosporan issues.

The individual lots are extensively described with weights, legends, catalogue references, provenances, rarity notes and contemporary auction estimates. Numerous coins are illustrated, often at enlarged size, making the catalogue useful both as an auction record and as a numismatic reference work.
