Graeco-Roman Terracotta Unguentarium with Elongated Neck - 1st Century BC to 2nd Century AD
A Graeco-Roman terracotta unguentarium with an elongated, narrow neck rising from a rounded, pear-shaped lower body. The body gradually contracts towards the shoulder before continuing into the tall neck, creating a slender, continuous silhouette. A thickened, outward-flaring rim frames the small opening, while the rounded lower body terminates in a compact, flattened base.
The pottery displays warm pinkish-buff and reddish-brown tones beneath extensive pale surface deposits. Fine horizontal forming lines remain visible in places, particularly around the neck and upper body. The surface is unevenly preserved, with abrasion, small pits and localised losses. Minor irregularities are also visible around the rim. A pronounced pale diagonal line crosses part of the body and shoulder; its nature cannot be established from the photograph alone.
Unguentaria were small vessels used for holding limited quantities of liquids, including scented preparations and oils. This example combines a restrained, undecorated body with a particularly elongated neck, allowing its proportions and the varied texture of the ceramic surface to provide its visual character.
Material: Terracotta
Dimensions: 12 cm height
Weight: 91.72 gr
Provenance: Aduired in Denmark from an Gallery, previously from a personal collection.
