About This Piece A striking vase in a deep, glossy ruri blue (瑠璃色/ Deep lapis blue), decorated with softly colored peonies in pale yellow, white and pink, blue-green foliage, and delicate gold detailing that creates a beautiful contrast against the rich blue ground. Design and Decoration A large peony dominates the front of the vase, surrounded by smaller peonies, delicate flowers, leaves and trailing vines. The large peony is rendered with numerous overlapping petals, each carefully delineated. Pale yellow and white predominate, with touches of soft pink. Fine gold lines trace the edges of the petals, clearly defining the intricate layers of the flower. The blue-green leaves are equally detailed, with finely rendered veins and serrated edges. Gold lines accent both their outlines and veins, extending the detailed decoration beyond the flowers themselves. Smaller blossoms and slender vines are arranged between the peonies, connecting the floral composition across the surface. Near the upper part of the vase, just below the rim, is a gold chrysanthemum motif. The rim itself is also finished with a fine gold border. Color and Form The vase has a glossy, deep ruri blue (瑠璃色) ground, against which pale yellow, white, pink, blue-green and gold decoration is layered. The restrained, delicate colors of the flowers stand in clear contrast to the rich blue background. The vase has a rounded body with pronounced shoulders that taper toward the mouth. Its 27 cm height and deep ruri-blue surface give it a strong visual presence. Mark, Original Box and Background A gold mark on the base indicates the name of the kiln that produced the vase. The vase comes with its original paulownia wood box (共箱), which also bears the name of the kiln. An inscription on the inside of the box lid records that the vase was presented as a commemorative gift. The accompanying items are the original paulownia wood box and a round red cloth mat for placing beneath the vase. Condition The vase is in very good condition. As this is a long-stored item, there may be minor soiling that is not visible in the photographs. Please also refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the condition. The glazed surface has a strong gloss and readily reflects lighting and surrounding objects. For this reason, the photographs were intentionally taken under reduced lighting to minimize reflections and make the decoration and colors easier to see. As a result, the vase may appear darker overall in the photographs than it does in person. Important Information 1.
