1790 VOC Duit – Holland – Dutch East Indies – NGC Certified Genuine
A genuine 1790 VOC duit from Holland, professionally authenticated and encapsulated by NGC.
The coin features the famous intertwined VOC monogram of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, better known as the Dutch East India Company, with the date 1790 below. This emblem became one of the most recognizable symbols of Dutch maritime trade and early global commerce.
Founded in 1602, the VOC grew into one of the most powerful commercial organizations of the early modern period. Its ships and trading network connected the Netherlands with southern Africa, India, Ceylon, Southeast Asia, China, Japan and the Indonesian archipelago. The company played a major role in the international trade of spices, textiles, tea, coffee, porcelain and many other commodities.
Copper duits such as this were practical small-denomination coins intended for everyday transactions. They circulated within the wider monetary system of the Dutch East Indies and other areas connected to VOC trade. Unlike prestigious gold and large silver coins, these copper pieces were part of ordinary commercial life.
This example is attributed to Holland, the economically dominant province of the Dutch Republic. Holland included major commercial centers such as Amsterdam, which became one of the principal financial and administrative hubs of the VOC.
The year 1790 is especially interesting historically because it belongs to the final decade of the Dutch East India Company. By this time, the VOC was already facing serious financial and administrative difficulties. Political instability, warfare and changing economic conditions further weakened the company, which was ultimately dissolved in 1799.
The coin therefore dates from the closing period of one of the most important trading organizations in world history.
This example has been authenticated by NGC and is designated GENUINE under certification number 8447939-024. It has not received a numerical grade, but its authenticity has been professionally confirmed.
The coin shows substantial circulation and age-related wear, with a dark brown patina and areas of deeper coloration and oxidation. The VOC monogram and the 1790 date remain identifiable. The surfaces reflect the character of an original copper coin that has survived for more than two centuries.
Please study the photographs carefully, as they show the exact coin offered and form an important part of the condition description.
