This lot offers a collection of 17 Chinese calligraphy and painting brushes (maobi) in a wide range of sizes and styles. It includes several unused examples that still carry their original paper labels. It would suit calligraphers, ink painters, and collectors of Asian art materials. The set runs from a long, slender brush with a grey-haired tip down to small, finely pointed brushes in protective tubes. Three matching brushes with white goat-hair heads are bound together as a set, marked 志昌堂 (Zhichangtang). Other brushes carry the red-and-yellow double-sheep label (双羊牌), the green horse-pattern label, and markings such as 七紫三羊毫 (seven-purple, three-goat hair), 短鋒宿羊毫 (short-tip aged goat hair) and 大觀書畫 (Daguan shuhua), along with the name 栗成. Please refer to the photos for the characters and labels on each brush. The handles are mostly natural bamboo, with some in dark wood or brown lacquer. Several are wrapped in a snake-scale pattern and finished with woven cord loops. The brush heads use various natural hair in white, grey, brown and orange tones, from soft heads for broad washes to fine tips for detailed line work. The smaller brushes come with clear protective caps. Condition: Mixed. Some brushes are unused with original labels intact, while others show light signs of use and age, such as small marks on the handles, discoloration, and wear to the labels.
