卖家的描述
Japanese Hanging Scroll – Two Quails and Flowers – Attributed to Okada Kochu (1895–1955) – Nihonga Painting on Silk
About the Artist – Okada Kochu (1895–1955)
Okada Kochu (岡田壺中) was a Japanese Nihonga painter active during the Taisho and early Showa periods.
According to Japanese biographical references, Kochu studied under Matsumoto Fuko (1840–1923), an influential Japanese painter, and Hayami Gyoshu (1894–1935), one of the leading figures of modern Nihonga painting.
Kochu was associated with the Japan Art Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) as an Inyu (associate member), and his exhibition history includes the Imperial Art Exhibition (Teiten).
His artistic background places him within the development of modern Japanese painting, which combined traditional painting techniques with renewed attention to naturalistic observation and composition.
A painting by Okada Kochu entitled “Frog” (蛙), dating from the late Taisho period, is recorded in the collection of the Kawagoe City Art Museum in Japan.
Description of the Artwork
This elegant Japanese hanging scroll depicts two quails resting beneath a flowering plant with delicate white blossoms, leaves and stems.
The birds are rendered with detailed feather patterns and subtle shades of brown, while the flowers and foliage are painted with gentle tonal variations.
The warm golden-beige background creates a peaceful atmosphere, highlighting the delicate beauty of the natural world.
The balanced vertical composition reflects the traditional Japanese Kacho-ga (flower-and-bird painting) genre.
The painting bears a signature that appears to read “Kochu saku” (壺中作), meaning “painted by Kochu”, accompanied by a red artist’s seal in the lower right corner.
The work is attributed to Okada Kochu on the basis of the signature; independent authentication has not been established.
