ITEM DESCRIPTION
This is an elegant bottle-shaped vase crafted using the techniques of Takaoka Dōki, a traditional craft from Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The form flows from a slender, flared mouth down to a rounded body, finished in a marbled colour palette blending deep green, bronze-toned brown, and gold, with a surface that shifts in appearance depending on the light. A stamped mark is visible on the base, though no individual artist name or studio name is recorded.
This piece is unused, with no evidence of water or flower arrangement. Some fading is present, attributable to storage over time rather than use.
Artist Profile
Takaoka Dōki is a regional craft tradition that began in 1611, when seven foundry workers were invited to Takaoka, a castle town in Toyama Prefecture, initially to produce everyday iron goods such as farming tools and cooking pots. The casting of copper wares developed approximately between 1830 and 1848. In 1975, Takaoka Dōki became the first craft in Japan to be designated a National Traditional Craft. During the Meiji era, works from Takaoka were exhibited at world expositions held in Vienna, London, and Paris, drawing international attention to Japanese metalwork. This traditional craft combines precise casting techniques using sand moulds and lost-wax moulds, chasing and inlay techniques derived from the art of sword fittings, and distinctive colouring methods employing chemical and natural materials — characteristics well reflected in the green-and-gold marbled surface of this piece. No individual artist name or studio name is inscribed on this work; it is therefore considered an unsigned example within the broader craft tradition of Takaoka Dōki.
