Before photography, naturalists kept their discoveries in cabinets: shallow wooden drawers lined with white paper, every leaf and insect pinned flat and labelled by hand. The best of those cabinets were not science but art — a quiet poetry of pressed colour, arranged on paper as carefully as a painting. This framed piece is a cabinet in one frame. Behind clear glass, a deep brown wooden frame holds a white mount laid out with botanical specimens: a branch of red leaves, dried stems and seed heads, clusters of small fruits and florets, a full pressed butterfly with its wings spread — each one labelled on a small handwritten tag, in the manner of a Victorian collector's sheet. The palette is autumn's own: russet, ochre, dried green and the dusty blue of old paper. It hangs like a painting and reads like a treasure box — natural history arranged for the wall, equally at home above a sofa, on a sideboard, or as the centrepiece of a gallery wall of botanical prints. > > *"What the Victorians kept in drawers, this keeps on your wall."* A beautiful piece of botanical art — for lovers of natural history, vintage interiors, or anyone who wants a small cabinet of wonders without the cabinet.
