The domed shell is decorated in relief with five bats surrounding a large stylised shou (壽) longevity character, forming the traditional auspicious motif Wufu Pengshou (五福捧寿), or “Five Blessings Surrounding Longevity”. The five bats represent the Five Blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue and a peaceful end. The raised bats and scrolling decoration are made of brass, creating a striking contrast with the dark bronze surface and naturally developed green verdigris patina. The turtle itself is finely modelled, with detailed scales to the legs and an expressive raised head. The underside bears the six-character mark 大明宣徳年製 (Da Ming Xuande Nianzhi), meaning “Made during the Xuande reign of the Great Ming dynasty.” As with many fine Chinese and Japanese bronzes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this is a traditional apocryphal/reverential reign mark paying tribute to the legendary Xuande casting tradition. Good antique condition with age-related wear, minor scratches, discolouration, oxidation and areas of green verdigris. The lid fits somewhat loosely, consistent with an old cast bronze piece, and there is a small chip to the edge of one of the raised brass bat wings at the lower right of the lid. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the condition. ※Important: For Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Monaco and Portugal, orders of €150 or less cannot currently be shipped due to the new €3 customs duty/IOSS issue.
