An Elegant Satsuma Tea Bowl Adorned with the Colors of Autumn
This beautifully decorated Japanese matcha tea bowl, or chawan, is signed Gyokueizan (玉栄山) and accompanied by its original inscribed wooden box.
The bowl features a warm ivory-yellow glaze with delicate crackling, richly decorated with an arrangement of autumn grasses and flowers. Fine brushwork brings together red susuki grass, purple blossoms, yellow flowers and green foliage, enhanced by subtle touches of gold.
The decoration is concentrated on one side, while the opposite side remains largely undecorated, allowing the soft glaze and its delicate crackle pattern to be appreciated.
The interior is finished in a warm golden-yellow glaze, creating a pleasing contrast with the colorful exterior.
About the Artist and Satsuma Ware
The accompanying wooden box bears the signature Gyokueizan (玉栄山), identifying the maker associated with this piece.
Satsuma ware is a celebrated Japanese ceramic tradition originating in Kagoshima, particularly admired for its fine crackled glazes, delicate overglaze painting and elegant gold decoration.
This bowl reflects that decorative tradition through its finely painted seasonal flowers and restrained, harmonious colors.
The Meaning of Autumn Grasses
Autumn grasses, or akikusa, are a beloved subject in Japanese painting and decorative arts. They symbolize the changing seasons and the fleeting beauty of nature.
