A Rustic Japanese Tea Bowl – Expressive Brushwork and a Distinctive Split Foot
This Japanese matcha tea bowl (chawan) features a harmonious combination of soft grey-white glaze, earthy iron-brown decoration and a beautifully carved split foot.
The bowl has a gently tapered, deep form with a slightly irregular rim. Fine horizontal throwing lines run around the exterior, creating a subtle texture that emphasizes its handmade character.
Across the front, a dark iron-brown brushstroke is accompanied by flowing white glaze trails and smaller brown markings. The composition has an expressive, almost abstract quality, resembling a winding stream or a landscape painted with just a few confident strokes.
The glaze displays natural variations of pale grey, warm ivory and sandy beige, with fine iron speckles scattered across the surface.
Inside, the warm glaze gathers around a visible spiral at the center, creating an attractive contrast with the cooler exterior.
Wari-Kodai and Japanese Tea Ceramics
One of the most distinctive features of this bowl is its wari-kodai (割高台), a deliberately notched foot ring.
This form of foot has a long history in Japanese tea ceramics and reflects the appreciation of asymmetry, individuality and expressive craftsmanship.
The combination of natural glaze variations, visible throwing marks and an unconventional foot embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, celebrating the quiet beauty of handmade objects.
