Item Description A small three-drawer wooden chest decorated in Nikko-bori, the traditional Japanese carving technique. A large peony in bold relief is carved across the drawer fronts. The dark finish contrasts with vivid red in the carved lines, so the blossoms, buds and leaves stand out sharply. The design runs continuously over all three drawers, and each drawer has a round red wooden knob. The chest stands on a stepped plinth base. It works well as a jewellery or trinket box, or as a decorative piece on a desk or shelf. It was kept at a family home as a display piece. Size Height: 25.5 cm Width: 24 cm Depth: 18 cm Weight 1761 g Condition Used condition with light surface scratches and rubbing consistent with age, visible on the top and side panels and inside the drawers. The carved peony and the knobs are intact, and there is no major damage.
