Ake-Ptolemaïs, modern Acre, was a major port on the Levantine coast with deep Phoenician roots. Renamed Ptolemaïs under Ptolemy II in the third century BC, it later passed under Seleukid rule. Its harbour made it a valuable centre of trade and a strategic base in struggles between Hellenistic kings and the rising Hasmonean state, while its changing rulers left their mark on its coinage and civic identity.
