Itotombo Makie Naganatsume 糸蜻蛉蒔絵長棗 (いととんぼまきえながなつめ)|Nakabayashi Seizan 中林星山 (なかばやしせいざん)
The damselfly (Ito-tombo) has a slender body, and its light flight over the water gives a cool impression. In the tea ceremony, dragonflies are considered auspicious patterns called "Kachi-mushi" (winning insects) because they move only forward and never retreat. However, when depicted specifically as a damselfly, as in this work, it is used to evoke coolness from midsummer to early autumn and to represent a refined, quiet atmosphere associated with waterside scenes. Seizan specializes in the motif of the damselfly and has created many notable works using high-grade woods such as Kurogaki (black persimmon) and Paulownia, including the "Damselfly Makie Kogo" (incense box). The slender and delicate body and wings of the damselfly are expressed with glittering mother-of-pearl (Raden) inlay.
Artist Profile:
Nakabayashi Seizan was born in Fukui Prefecture in 1951. He specializes in the production of tea utensils, mainly Natsume (tea caddies) and Kogo (incense boxes). His motifs mainly feature plants, flowers, birds, and small animals, frequently utilizing rare wood materials combined with Raden and gold lacquer.
