Mongolian Buddhist Protective Amulet – Sacred Mantra and Five-Pointed Star Ritual Diagram – Woodblock Print – Mongolia – Late 19th to Early 20th Century
A rarel Tibetan Buddhist ritual amulet featuring sacred inscriptions, geometric symbols and a distinctive protective diagram, associated with the Tibetan–Mongolian Buddhist religious tradition and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
This elongated single-sheet ritual manuscript displays a fascinating symbolic composition, combining several lines of Tibetan script with large curved geometric elements and five-pointed stars arranged symmetrically around the central inscription.
The central section contains several lines of Tibetan writing, possibly representing ritual formulas, sacred invocations or protective mantras. The text is enclosed within a striking arrangement of bold black curved lines, creating a distinctive geometric composition.
Five-pointed stars appear in different positions around the manuscript, including the upper and lower corners. Their precise symbolic significance within this particular composition remains uncertain and would require further specialist study.
The combination of sacred inscriptions and geometric imagery suggests a possible protective or talismanic function, consistent with the broader tradition of ritual diagrams and amulets found in Tibetan and Himalayan religious practices.
The manuscript appears to have been produced using a traditional printing technique, possibly woodblock printing, on paper. The bold black outlines and carefully arranged inscriptions create a visually striking contrast against the naturally aged surface.
Its elongated rectangular format is reminiscent of traditional Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhist manuscript leaves and ritual paper objects.
The precise meaning of the inscriptions and the original ritual purpose of the diagram would require specialist translation and examination.
The manuscript is preserved in old and used condition, showing visible signs of age and handling, including discoloration, staining, folding lines, creases, surface wear, worn edges, small tears and minor paper losses, particularly along the lower edge.
