Kotsuzumi drum body (dō) with pine trees - Gold maki-e on black lacquer, wood - Japan - 20th century
The wooden body (dō) of a kotsuzumi, the hourglass-shaped shoulder drum played in Noh and Kabuki theatre.
The exterior is lacquered in glossy black and decorated in gold maki-e with stylised pine trees, their spreading branches and needles wrapping around the cups and the narrow waist. The pine is an auspicious symbol of longevity and steadfastness, and is closely associated with the Noh stage, whose backdrop traditionally depicts a great pine tree.
The interior is left as natural wood, showing the turning marks of the cups and the carved tool marks (kanname) inside the waist, which shape the tone of the drum.
Please note: this is the drum body only. The skins (heads) and cords are not included.
