Beautiful set of bookends, monks or a Fool?
Flanders Belgium first half of the 20th century.

What character these bookends show.
Fully signed but difficult to decipher. The faces are older, and originally part of a piece of furniture.

In Flemish-Belgium, this type of expressive character heads were often carved by local masters, frequently inspired by historic motifs:
• Misericords and stalls: the faces with their expressive mimics strongly recall the satirical and folk woodcarving found under church stalls (misericords) and in choir stalls from the Gothic and Renaissance periods.
• Flemish oak: the use of robust, high-quality oak is characteristic of the region, with the deep, warm patina beautifully accentuating the chisel marks.
• Character heads: this type of carving celebrates the expressiveness of everyday or historical Flemish folk life, often with a wink (the subtle smile)
