族 antique Wood Carving (1920s–1950s) – Saint Christopher and the Christ Child, Neo-Baroque Style
For sale is an exceptional vintage religious sculpture in solid wood, handcrafted during the first half of the 20th century (estimated period: 1920–1950). The piece depicts Saint Christopher (Christophorus) carrying the Christ Child on his shoulders—a Christian symbol and the patron saint of travelers, drivers, and pilgrims.
The statuette is executed in the Neo-Baroque style—an aesthetic highly regarded and popular within the renowned traditional workshops of the European Alpine regions (Tyrol, Val Gardena, Oberammergau) during the first half of the last century. The work is striking for the dynamism of the cloak’s folds, the dramatic expression on the saint’s face, and the refinement of its miniature details—from the meticulously carved beard and the Christ Child’s curls to the *globus cruciger* (orb topped with a cross) held in the Child’s hand.
Period / Age: Approx. 70–100 years old (first half of the 20th century). It features a superb natural patina, developed through the organic oxidation of the wood over time.
Material: High-quality, dense hardwood (likely walnut or pear wood), finished using traditional waxing techniques, resulting in a warm, satiny sheen.
Craftsmanship: An authentic, monolithic carving (hand-carved from a single piece of wood).
Dimensions: Total height of 24.5 cm (including the integrated 2.5 cm octagonal base). Weight: 306.4 grams (a solid, heavy piece for its size—a testament to the quality of the wood).
Condition: Intact. The piece is perfectly preserved, with no cracks, signs of woodworm, restorations, or missing elements (the finial atop the saint’s head is original and complete).
A rare collector’s item, rich in symbolic and aesthetic significance; ideal for period-style decor or art displays, or as a unique gift intended to offer protection to those who travel.
