Background Information:
This medieval bronze finger ring dates to the Crusader period and is set with a striking blue glass cabochon mounted in a raised four-claw bezel. The elegant and functional design securely holds the coloured insert while creating a refined appearance that reflects the jewellery traditions of the eastern Mediterranean during the High Middle Ages. Blue glass was widely employed as an attractive substitute for costly gemstones such as sapphire and was highly valued for its vivid colour and durability.
Rings of this type were worn throughout the Crusader States and neighbouring Byzantine and Islamic territories by both men and women. They served as personal ornaments while also expressing status, wealth, or individual taste. During the Crusader period, jewellery styles evolved through close contact between Westernopean, Byzantine, and Near Eastern craftsmen, resulting in distinctive designs that combined elements from several artistic traditions.
The ring was cast in bronze using established medieval techniques before being carefully finished by hand. The bezel was specifically designed to receive a rounded glass cabochon, which remains preserved in situ. Similar bronze rings with coloured glass settings have been recovered from Crusader settlements, castles, pilgrimage centres, and medieval trading towns throughout the Levant, demonstrating their widespread use among soldiers, merchants, pilgrims, and local inhabitants.
Dating to the 11th–14th century A.D., this ring belongs to a period characterised by extensive trade and cultural exchange across the eastern Mediterranean. Workshops produced jewellery that was both practical and decorative, allowing coloured glass to imitate the appearance of precious stones while remaining accessible to a broader section of medieval society.
