A charming Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting a young Buddhist monk accompanied by a small dog, signed “Ishikawa” (石川) on the underside. The monk’s rounded head, gentle expression and flowing robes give this miniature carving a warm and engaging character. The little dog beside him adds a playful touch, creating an endearing composition that rewards viewing from different angles. The reverse features a broad, finely textured hat, providing an attractive contrast to the smooth curves of the figure and the folds of his robes. The warm amber-brown tones of the boxwood bring out the carved details beautifully. An appealing piece for collectors of Japanese netsuke, miniature wood carvings and animal-themed Japanese art.
