Item Description
This is a pair of Japanese carved wood netsuke depicting Fujin, the god of wind, and Raijin, the god of thunder. The Fujin is signed 光玉 Kogyoku and the Raijin is signed 宏中 Hironaka. They are by different carvers. I selected them at different times for their carving and assembled them as a matching set for my own collection.
Fujin strides on a swirling cloud base, holding the wind bag in an arc above his head, with a fierce expression and finely incised hair. Raijin stands on a similar base with a mallet in one hand, surrounded by his ring of drums, and his face is strongly modelled. The two figures are close in size and colour, so they display well together. The anatomy, drapery and facial detail are carved with care and show good strength, which is the quality I looked for when choosing them.
Each netsuke carries a black cord. There are no formal himotoshi holes, but the carving offers several places where a cord can be passed through. The signatures are on the underside of each base.
Artist Profile
The signature 光玉 Kogyoku appears on several documented netsuke, including an ivory hare sold at auction and a lacquered wood Noh actor. One record associates the name with Anrakusai Kogyoku (approx. 1814-1870). The Online Netsuke-shi Database, however, lists several independent carvers who use the reading Kogyoku, so I cannot attribute this piece to one specific master. The signature 宏中 Hironaka is also documented. Bonhams has offered boxwood netsuke bearing it, dated 19th/20th century. No further biographical details for Hironaka can be verified from available sources.
