This piece is a Tibetan-style, gilt-bronze seated figure of Vairocana (Dainichi Nyorai) with four faces. Vairocana is the supreme deity in Esoteric Buddhism, and the four faces represent the Buddhas of the four cardinal directions. The figure wears a five-leaf jeweled crown and sits in the full-lotus position (padmasana) upon a lotus pedestal; the hands are held in the *dhyana-mudra* (meditation gesture), supporting a *dharmachakra* (Dharma wheel). The *dharmachakra* motif on the chest and the multi-layered necklaces are rendered with exquisite, finely chased detail.
