**Mathieu Matégot — “Soumba” Side Table, France, 1953**
A particularly characterful example of Mathieu Matégot’s celebrated *Soumba* side table, designed in France in 1953. Its wonderfully light architectural form combines slender tubular legs with Matégot’s distinctive perforated metal *Rigitulle* top—an ingenious material that became one of the defining signatures of his work.
The table retains its original screws and original red painted finish, both important details consistent with its period manufacture. It is presented entirely in its authentic, untouched condition, with a beautifully matured patina, traces of wear and areas of surface oxidation accumulated over more than seventy years.
The oxidation is largely superficial and could be corrected with relative ease should the purchaser prefer a more polished appearance. Nevertheless, we have deliberately refrained from restoration, as the original paint and honest patina form an essential part of the table’s history, character and desirability.
This is a genuine vintage collector’s piece, not a newly manufactured decorative object. We therefore kindly ask those expecting the immaculate finish of a new item from IKEA—or those unfamiliar with the entirely natural characteristics of important twentieth-century design—to refrain from purchasing, thereby avoiding unnecessary misunderstandings.
A sophisticated and increasingly sought-after piece of post-war French design, offered in wonderfully authentic condition.
