CEREMONIAL COMB NDENGESE D.R.C.
This comb is made by the Ndengese people. The Ndengese are of Mongo origin. The head surmounting the handle is that of a king or nobleman, recognizable by his royal cap showing a central peak. The Ndengese borrowed Kuba designs as can be seen on the bridge of the comb where we find an eternal knot, the symbol of everlasting life. The ringed neck points back to the large anthropomorphic figures portraying kings and chiefs, named isikimanji. The tribal markings in the face echo those on Kuba pieces. The Ndengese have made many types of small objects in wood and ivory surmounted with carved heads, but combs are rare.
In sound state and well used. It dates back to the 1920-1930s. On stand.
It stems from the collection of Jacques Delorme of Brussels (Belgium) and was bought from him by H. Westerdijk in 1969.
Dimensions : 22 x 6 x 2 cm .
Weight: 185g including stand.
People / Region: The Ndengese live to the north of the Kuba on the other side of the Lukenia River in
south central D.R.C.
