This album is a very large format (52.5 x 40 cm), in a contemporary binding of calf and cloth, and consists of thick paper onto which 12 ink and watercolour images have been attached. These measure 38 x 29 cm (interior margin); one is numbered '12' on the margin (in Japanese). There is a red stamp, again in Japanese, on another image (see photo). The images are extremely explicit in the recognised shunga style. The quality is very high; the twelve works are evidently by the same artist; there is evidence of gofun (a white powder derived from crushed seashells) to magnify the vaginal fluids secreting from the woman's vagina as well as of mica to highlight the colours. The impact (size, quality, imagery) is quite stunning. The set of twelve paintings comes with two additional hand-painted woodcuts, a small bonus. These are of the same size as the paintings. But the artist is presumably different, and there is scroll writing on the prints. The shunga images of genitalia were designed apparently to provide sex education! The twelve large paintings are bound in a folio volume (and may have originated from another source) and this is very nicely bound in calf and cloth.
