Gaius Messius Quintus Trajanus Decius, commonly known as Trajan Decius, was a Roman Emperor who ruled from 249 to 251 AD.

Decius rose to power after an extensive political career, serving as senator, consul and governor. In 249 AD he defeated Emperor Philip 'the Arab' in a battle near Verona.

Decius is infamous for initiating the Decian persecutions of the Christians. In 250 AD he issued an edict that required all citizens, with the exception of Jews, to perform a sacrifice to the Roman gods and the well-being of the Emperor.

His reign was marked by efforts to repel the invasions of the Goths in the north. In 251 AD Decius and his son, co-Emperor Herennius Etruscus were both killed by the Goths in the Battle of Abritus.

GENIVS EXERCITVS ILLVRICIANI: To the Genius (guardian spirit) of the army in Illyria (western Balkans).

Genius: In Roman religion, the genius is the individual instance of a general divine nature that is present in every individual person, place or thing.
